The comparison at a glance
Use this table to narrow the decision, then read the specific product. It describes planning trade-offs rather than promising a fixed journey time or an included transfer from every hotel.
| Base | A useful fit | Main detail to check |
|---|---|---|
| Phuket | A broad choice of boat formats alongside a varied island holiday | Your hotel’s pickup zone and actual marina |
| Khao Lak | A mainland beach stay with a longtail bay day | Road transfer and return to your stretch of coast |
| Krabi / Ao Nang | A Krabi holiday with a separate Phang Nga excursion | Whether the tour crosses by road to the mainland bay |
| Phang Nga mainland | A focused bay, viewpoint and temple itinerary | Pier transfer when buying a boat-only product |
| Koh Yao | Several slower island days | Island pickup and the boat connection to the excursion |
Phuket: the neighbourhood makes a difference
A hotel in Phuket Old Town, an airport-area property and a resort near Kata or Rawai are not equivalent starting points. Shared pickups can also collect other passengers before reaching the pier. Ask for the actual pickup window and return arrangement rather than estimating the day from a map's direct-drive result.
Phuket offers useful choices among speedboats, larger excursion boats and later cruise or canoe programmes. Select the format you want, then confirm that its transport works from your hotel. A lively beach base may be worth the longer transfer if that is how you want to spend the other days of your holiday.
Still choosing an area on Phuket itself? Our Phuket travel guide compares the island's beaches and neighbourhoods, so you can weigh beach life against the drive to the east-coast piers.
Khao Lak: a beach holiday plus a mainland bay route
Khao Lak lies on the mainland Andaman coast rather than inside the inner bay. A Phang Nga excursion can combine a road journey with a local longtail outing. The Khao Lak longtail product in our selection is a concrete starting point for comparing that arrangement, not a promise that every operator covers the entire coastline.
Give the organiser your property's name and address. Resorts spread along different stretches of coast, so “Khao Lak pickup” needs an exact match. Avoid assuming a Phuket-departing boat package will include the additional road journey simply because both destinations are in southern Thailand.
Krabi: identify which Hong and which bay
Krabi and Ao Nang have their own island excursions, including a separate Hong Islands destination. That is different from the Hong name appearing in many Phang Nga canoe itineraries. A James Bond longtail tour sold from Krabi may first use a road transfer to the Phang Nga mainland.
Read the named stops and the road-and-boat sequence before comparing prices. If you want to remain around Krabi's islands, book that experience intentionally. If you specifically want James Bond Island and Koh Panyee, choose a product that names them. The photographs of limestone islands alone are not enough to distinguish the routes.
Mainland and island bases for a more focused stay
Phang Nga town can work for modest accommodation and mainland sightseeing, while Samet Nangshe properties make the viewpoint part of the stay. Neither should be booked under the assumption that every shared boat operator collects there. A locally departing private longtail may suit the plan better, with the road transfer arranged separately.
Koh Yao is a different proposition: your hotel and excursion may be separated by another boat journey. Ask for an island pickup or a locally arranged outing before buying a Phuket package. Reaching a mainland departure independently can erase the time and money you hoped to save.
Keep one base or move?
For a short holiday, staying put and taking one well-organised excursion often uses time better than changing hotels solely to shorten one morning. For a longer trip, a mainland viewpoint night or several Koh Yao nights can add a distinct experience. Count packing, checkout, luggage and transfer time as part of that change.
An editorial two-base plan might combine Phuket with Koh Yao, or Khao Lak with a mainland Phang Nga night. Avoid making the move and a tightly timed excursion dependent on each other without confirmed luggage and pickup arrangements. Choose the sequence that leaves a spare weather day and an uncomplicated airport departure.

Questions worth asking
Which base is always fastest?
There is no universal answer. Compare the exact hotel, pier, pickup circuit and boat itinerary.
Can I visit from Ao Nang?
Yes, through a product that explicitly serves your pickup area and visits Phang Nga Bay. Check the road transfer and named stops.
Should I move hotels just for one day trip?
Usually compare a direct excursion from your existing base first. Moving is more worthwhile when it adds several experiences or an island stay.
Are Krabi’s Hong Islands the same canoe destination?
No. Use the departure area and full route to distinguish the separate destinations.
