Choose your overnight base before buying the boat day
Phuket works for a holiday mixing the bay with island beaches or town life. Khao Lak suits a mainland beach stay with an excursion across to the bay. Phang Nga town or the Samet Nangshe area can suit a mainland-focused trip. Koh Yao creates an island stay that requires its own boat connection.
A cheaper tour fare is not a reason to choose an inconvenient hotel. Compare several ordinary days as well as the excursion morning. If you already have accommodation, search for a product that explicitly serves that address; do not buy first and hope a broadly worded pickup promise covers it.
Use the airport that fits the rest of the trip
Phuket and Krabi are useful arrival airports for different approaches to the region. Flights, the actual overnight base and the complete onward transfer should drive the choice. Landing at Krabi does not mean every Phang Nga excursion departs from a nearby Krabi pier; some sightseeing days travel by road to a mainland longtail departure.
Keep arrival day simple after a long flight. Immigration, bags and flight delays can consume the margin between landing and a boat connection. If continuing to Koh Yao, ask the property for its latest suitable arrival and a fallback plan. For a mainland hotel, confirm the exact address rather than giving the driver only a province name.
A pier name is part of your booking
Different tours use different piers and marinas. On Phuket, Ao Po, Ao Po Grand Marina and Bang Rong should not be treated as interchangeable pickup instructions. On the Phang Nga mainland, a private longtail booking should identify the actual local departure point and how to find the organiser.
Save the map pin, meeting instructions and operator contact offline. Send the pin to your driver and ask the tour company whether self-arrival is allowed. If a transfer is included, turning up at a pier independently can disrupt the organiser's passenger check-in. Follow the arrangement confirmed for your specific voucher.
On the mainland, Tha Dan and Sam Chong are useful names to recognise, but they are not interchangeable departure instructions. TAT's destination guide identifies Tha Dan as a starting point for the James Bond Island and Ko Panyi circuit. The currently listed TripGuru small-group tour instead names Sam Chong Pier after its Wat Suwan Khuha stop. A driver who knows only 'the Phang Nga pier' can therefore take you to the wrong place. Send the exact voucher pin and organiser's name, including for a privately hired longtail.
On Phuket, Royal Phuket Marina is another distinct departure point: Siam Adventure World's early-bird itinerary starts there. It is not Ao Po Pier, Ao Po Grand Marina or Bang Rong. Treat the pier as part of the product you have bought, not something to choose independently because another guide says it is the usual place. If you are changing from a hotel-pickup booking to self-arrival, ask the organiser to approve the change first.
| Your booking says | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Hotel pickup | The covered address, pickup window and any extra charge |
| Meet at the pier | The exact map pin, check-in point and return location |
| Island transfer | Both mainland and island piers, plus the road sections |
| Private tour | Whether the service starts at your hotel or only at the boat |

Do not mistake a local bus for a complete bay transfer
Phuket Smart Bus describes an airport-to-west-coast route serving beach areas through to Rawai. It is useful for those hotel journeys, but it is not a general shuttle to Phang Nga mainland or every east-coast marina. A public-transport itinerary may therefore require a separate final transfer.
Likewise, reaching Phang Nga town by road does not necessarily put you beside your excursion boat. Before choosing a cheaper connection, add the cost and availability of the last leg. A prearranged hotel pickup can be worthwhile when it removes an early-morning transfer that would otherwise be difficult to coordinate.
For an independent mainland journey, Nakhon Borrikarn's published route list is a useful starting point. Its Phuket–Nakhon Si Thammarat services list Phuket Bus Terminals 1 and 2, Khok Kloi, Phang Nga Bus Terminal and Krabi Bus Terminal among the stops. Look for a ticket to Phang Nga Bus Terminal rather than assuming you must travel to the route's final city. Ask the operator to confirm that it sells your short segment, the correct Phuket boarding terminal and the departure for your date.
Keep the bus and boat reservations separate in your plan. Arrival at Phang Nga Bus Terminal still leaves a road transfer to your hotel or named pier; an intercity ticket does not include a bay cruise. A late-morning bus may suit a town overnight better than a same-day prebooked boat. Compare the full journey with an inclusive tour pickup before choosing solely on the bus fare.
Luggage and changing hotels
Ask about luggage before using an excursion as a bridge between hotels. A day boat may have limited protected storage, and the standard return may be the original pickup zone. One-way drop-off or large bags can require a different arrangement. Keep medicine, documents and essentials with you in a compact protected bag.
For Koh Yao, confirm baggage handling at both piers and the hotel vehicle. A transfer quoted per passenger may treat oversized items differently. Ask who helps with lifting rather than assuming that porter service is included. Carrying less can make the boat-to-pier changes much easier.
If you are changing hotels via Phuket, our Phuket luggage storage guide helps you plan a suitable drop-off point, collection time and onward journey.
Plan the return as carefully as the outward trip
An advertised return time is not a flight guarantee. Weather, road traffic, the final stop and multiple hotel drop-offs all affect the journey. Avoid placing a non-refundable flight or tightly timed onward bus immediately after a bay excursion. A separate departure day gives more room for changes.
Before leaving your hotel, check that you have the organiser's contact, correct meeting location and instructions for a late driver. For independently arranged transfers, agree waiting time and the price of changes. The best transport plan is the one you can explain in a few clear steps, including what happens if one step runs late.
Compare the complete transfer on 12Go
12Go can help compare the practical journeys around a bay holiday: its Phuket–Khao Lak search lists road transport, while Phuket–Koh Yao Noi includes boat and combined land-and-water options. Enter your travel date and passenger count before comparing. A route page establishes a place to search, not that every advertised service runs on your date. Use the selected operator’s details and final confirmation for the journey you actually buy.
Compare the cost from accommodation to accommodation. Add any separate ride to the departure point, the island-side vehicle, baggage charges and booking fees shown at checkout. Read recent reviews for that operator and route, rather than relying on the platform’s overall score. Check amendment and cancellation terms before payment; do not assume another operator will accept the ticket if you miss the original departure.
For Khao Lak, match the listed drop-off to your hotel’s exact area. A town stop and a hotel transfer are different products. If the departure says Phuket Airport Junction or Old Airport Phuket Junction, obtain the stop pin; it is not an instruction to wait at arrivals. Download the issued voucher, not only the payment receipt, and check when to report for boarding. Keep a fallback budget for the final local connection.
| Ticket wording | Compare before paying |
|---|---|
| Boat only | Departure and arrival piers, baggage allowance and both road connections |
| Van + boat | Pickup zone, who handles the change of transport and the final drop-off |
| Private vehicle | Whole-vehicle price, passenger and bag capacity, waiting and requested stops |
Questions worth asking
Is Phang Nga town the boat departure point?
Not necessarily. Confirm the named pier for your tour and the road transfer from town.
Can Phuket Smart Bus take me to every bay pier?
No. Its published airport route serves Phuket’s west-coast beach corridor. Check a separate connection for other destinations.
Does pickup include all Phuket hotels?
Coverage is product-specific. Submit your actual hotel address and confirm any surcharge before booking.
Can a tour drop me at a different hotel?
Only with the organiser’s agreement. Check luggage, destination and any additional charge in advance.
