Thailand eSIM and internet: stay connected from Phuket to Phang Nga Bay

The useful connection is the one that lets you find your driver, open the right pier location and contact your hotel. For a Phang Nga Bay trip, choose your mobile plan before arrival and prepare the essential details to work offline as well. Airalo and Saily both sell Thailand eSIM plans; the right choice depends on your phone, dates and actual use.

Check the exact phone before buying

An eSIM plan needs a phone that supports eSIM and is not locked to one mobile network. Check your exact model and the country where it was sold; a familiar model name alone is not enough. Look for an option to add an eSIM in the mobile settings, then confirm compatibility with the provider. Ask your home carrier to resolve any network lock before departure.

If your phone cannot use eSIM, compare a physical tourist SIM or your existing carrier’s Thailand roaming package. There is no need to replace a working phone for this trip. If keeping your home SIM active for verification messages, check that carrier’s charges and choose the travel eSIM for mobile data. Disable automatic data switching if it could put paid roaming traffic on your home line.

Compare Airalo and Saily by the selected plan

Compare the same travel dates and usage rather than the smallest advertised price. Read the Thailand coverage, validity, data allowance, supported network, top-up options and refund conditions for the package you actually select. A Thailand-only plan should not be assumed to cover a side trip to Malaysia; a regional plan needs its own country list checked.

A fixed allowance is generally the total for the whole validity period, not a fresh allowance each day. An unlimited plan can still reduce speeds after a daily high-speed allowance. Both providers publish such conditions. Check the amount, reset rule and reduced speed before paying, especially if you will upload video or work from a laptop. Hotspot traffic also uses the same allowance.

Install and activate at the right time

Buying a plan, installing its eSIM and starting its validity are separate steps. Airalo says some packages begin when they connect to a supported network, while others begin on installation. Read the specific validity policy before installing early. Saily describes automatic activation on arrival when its eSIM is enabled and data roaming is on; also check the activation deadline shown for your purchase.

Complete the permitted setup using a stable connection before your flight, and save the installation instructions. At Phuket Airport, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and follow its roaming and network settings. Test a message and the hotel map before leaving Wi-Fi. If it fails, use the provider’s troubleshooting steps instead of deleting the eSIM immediately; reinstalling may require help.

Data, ordinary calls and a Thai number are different

A data connection lets compatible apps send messages or make internet calls, but does not automatically include ordinary phone calls, SMS or a Thai telephone number. For Airalo, read the selected package’s included services. Saily sells data plans and an optional phone-number service: that add-on supplies a US-based number, with separate call and text terms, not a local Thai number.

Ask your driver and accommodation which contact method they monitor. Save their agreed contact and your booking number before travel. If you need a Thai number for a specific service, choose a product that explicitly provides one and check any registration requirements. Do not assume a travel number will receive every bank or app verification code.

One hotspot or a connection for each traveller?

Saily supports hotspot sharing, and Airalo’s unlimited-plan policy also permits it; check the terms of your chosen package and device. A hotspot shares one phone’s existing connection with nearby devices. It does not turn one eSIM into independent connections for everyone. Sharing drains the host phone’s battery and uses the same data allowance, including any fair-use limits.

One hotspot may suit a couple who stay together. Separate connections are more useful if one person visits Phuket Old Town while another heads to the marina, or if family members may become separated at a pickup. Set a hotspot password, carry a charged power bank and avoid leaving laptop updates or cloud photo backups running over mobile data.

Prepare for the bay to be offline

A Thailand coverage claim is not a guarantee at every offshore stop, inside a cave or behind limestone cliffs. Treat continuous reception on a boat trip as uncertain. Download the relevant map area where your map app supports it, and save screenshots of your actual pier, hotel address, pickup instructions and return arrangement. A saved map is for finding your land transfer, not navigating a boat.

Keep vouchers and essential contacts on more than one phone when travelling together. Confirm any meeting-time change before boarding and agree what to do if messages cannot get through. Keep the phone dry and charged; upload photographs later on a suitable connection. For an island stay, ask the property about Wi-Fi in your room and any workspace you plan to use rather than inferring it from a general Wi-Fi listing.

Questions worth asking

Do I need a separate eSIM for Phuket and Phang Nga?

Usually not if the chosen plan covers Thailand. Check the selected package’s coverage and network details; nationwide coverage does not guarantee reception at every bay stop.

Can I install the eSIM before flying?

Often, but read the activation policy first. Some Airalo plans start their validity on installation. Follow the instructions and purchase deadline for the exact Airalo or Saily plan you choose.

Does an unlimited plan mean unlimited full-speed hotspot use?

No. A daily high-speed allowance and fair-use rules can apply, and shared traffic counts towards them. Read the selected plan’s speed and reset conditions.

Will an eSIM give me a Thai phone number?

Not automatically. Check the package’s calls and SMS features. Saily’s optional phone-number service uses a US number; a Thai number must be explicitly included in a different suitable product.
